Bathroom Meeting

You never know who you are going to run into on vacation.

Who would have thought I would have met
Houston Nutt on vacation in Gulf Shores, Alabama, in a movie theater bathroom?

How cool is that... and I will add random.

For those of you who do not know, Coach Nutt is the head football coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Go Hogs.

I took the picture on my Blackjack, so the quality isn't that great, but hey any picture is better than no picture at all.

vacation

Lacey and I leave this afternoon for a week at the beach.
So nice and relaxing.

We are headed out today after her family gets in town, so we can all travel together.

See you all next week.

birthday present

Lacey got me a real sweet new watch for my birthday.
I've been wanting a sports watch, and she came through real nicely.
Thanks Lace. I love you.

christ suffered too

I've been thinking about all my surgeries lately, as well as all the pain and frustration of everything.

I'm so thankful to serve Christ, who not only is with me always, but has personally endured suffering for my sake when he went to the cross. Suffering for both my healing and my salvation.

He knows my pain even though he is God. He didn't put it off on someone else. He willingly endured the cross for each of us. He didn't have to, but he chose to out of love for his creation.
How incredible is that.

In all my pain lately, I'm reminded that Christ suffered once for me so that he could identify with me in every situation.
I serve an incredible God.

surgery pictures

Here is the link to some pictures of my back.
I won't post them here. I don't want to gross anyone out.

Enjoy.
(If that is possible?)

changes ahead

This is a great article written by Scott Hodge, Lead Pastor of Orchard Valley Church in Illinois.

It was both motivating and inspiring for me for multiple personal reasons right now. I know God can do anything though. I just have to remind myself of that at times when things seem difficult.

Here's the
link.

finally home

I made it home from the hospital today. I'm feeling much better.
My surgery ran into complications with a slighly collapsed lung and fluid filling my lungs. So I was in the hospital longer than I expected and dealt with more pain than I needed. But I'm finally home.

All tubes are out, last vital signs taken, and no more crummy hospital beds to sleep in. My own home, my own bathroom, and my own bed.

Let's hope for a fast recovery this week before I head on vacation next Sunday.

thrive at the park

Our homegroups kicked off Wednesday night with a volleyball tournament. It was a huge win for us as a student ministry. This night wasn't pushed real big; it was just a launch to our homegroups. But students loved the competition and the night overall.

Several students stepped up big time and really connected to other students in their homegroup. They went out of their way to make sure they felt valued. It was huge to see some of them do that. It's so awesome to see sparks of "I get it" pop up in students and to just watch them honor God in every way at Thrive.

Congratulations to Ignite for the championship.

pre-district council

This week was the week of District Council for the North Texas District. It actually didn't start until Monday night, but we left Sunday night to hear Dr. Samuel Chand do a pre-council seminar, "What Keeps Pastors Up At Night."

I've heard Dr. Chand teach several times, but I'm impressed more and more by him every time I hear him teach. He's funny and witty, but tells things like they are.

Here are some notes and thoughts from the 6 hour session:
-There is no system to turn wrong people into right people.
-If I don't have the courage to confront and realign others, I will lose my leaders, not my followers. It's hard to follow someone who has such a major leadership gap as someone who will not deal with conflict.
-The vocal people are the one who get our attention. But are they getting things done?
-Conflict is neither good nor bad; it just simply is.
-Conflict is the difference between reality and expectations. To minimize conflict, expectations must be defined.
-How healthy is my heart and my family life? It will determine the health of my ministry.
-We hire people for what they know, but fire them for who they are.
-One of the greatest disservices I can do is not discipline and teach others.
-Self confidence and security is really knowing that God trusts me.
-You can only hold what you are prepared to hold. Until you are prepared to hold more, you can only hold your current capacity.
-Am I a steward of God's vision? Or do I compromise to please people?
-The question is not what you do, but who you are.
-Preparing for succession is a kingdom mindset and is being a good steward of God's vision. It's selfish not to have a plan of succession.
-God has determined he will keep you dependent on Him. The size of your vision must be greater than your resources.
-Those newest to an organization are usually the hardest workers. Natives do whatever they have to do to get by.
